Our Mission

To make sustainable fashion more accessible, educate about the

destructive industry practices and facilitate a more circular fashion economy.

Weaving Change was founded because the industry which created the clothes we loved was built on exploitation.

Fashion is more than shopping, it is a vessel for culture and identity, a medium to explore these ideas and show them to the world.

But if there are no places for these ideas to be explored, how can we engage in them?

We’ve seen what happens when people come together to mend, to create, to learn. Their is a shared excitement around new skills, a new slower pace evolves. The joy of textiles is actually brought to life.

We want to create more spaces. Spaces where we can collectively reimagine how we understand value in our clothes. Spaces where real circularity takes place, people & planet are not being exploited and textiles are a medium for creativity.

FOR THE PLANET

THE problem: OVERPRODUCTION AND TEXTILE WASTE

The fashion industry is responsible for around 8% of global carbon emissions, exceeding the combined impact of international aviation and shipping. Every second, the equivalent of one truckload of clothing is discarded or incinerated, with less than 1% of clothing being recycled into new garments.

Textile production consumes huge amounts of water and relies on dyes and chemicals that often pollute waterways. It takes 8,000 litres of water to produce a pair of jeans - roughly the amount of water one person drinks over seven years. Synthetic clothing is also responsible for around 35% of the microplastics found in our oceans.

WHY it matters…

FOR THE People

THE problem: low cost, high-volume production

Far too often, the people who make our clothes are overlooked; there is a cost associated with low price clothing. 93% of brands don’t pay garment workers a living wage - 80% of which are women. And, of 71 leading clothing retailers in the UK, 77% believed there was a likelihood of modern slavery occurring at some stage in their supply chain.

On top of that, the conditions in which garments are made are often hazardous and lead to long term health conditions for those working in garment factories.

FOR you and me
THE problem:

Disconnection

DIsSATISFACTION &

overconsumption

Have you ever looked into your wardrobe and thought, I’ve got nothing to wear? Fashion should be fun, not an added anxiety. But the industry has been built on mystifying the consumer with fast pace micro-trends. This creates a confusing mindscape, where we don’t relate to our clothing and can never figure out what to wear, buying and throwing away, fuelling the cycle of overconsumption.

How we envision change

The Three Threads of Change

Thread one… Repair

We believe lasting change starts with changing our relationship with clothing. By teaching mending & sewing skills, we give people agency to move away from seeing clothes as disposable and towards seeing them as something worth investing time, creativity and care into. We teach people to understand the true value of the garments they own, inspiring them to repair, adapt and re-imagine, instead of replace.

Thread two… community

Fashion is social, it always has been, but today this exclusively looks like shopping. How can we gather as more than consumers?

We create spaces where people can come together, create, explore and imagine, spaces where sustainable fashion is not just the ‘healthy-option’ , but the one which is more interesting and more exciting. We're creating a community where joy comes from making and mending together, not simply buying something new.

Thread three… well being

Mending and crafting is slow, tactile and meditative, a chance to be present with your hands and not caught up in the next trend. Slow spaces are the antidote to fast fashion’s noise: the pressure to keep, to buy more, to never feel satisfied. In creating spaces to slow down we aim to clear the mental clutter.

Our values are reflected not only in what we teach, but in how we operate. We work to minimise waste wherever possible within our ‘no thread to small policy’ - using over 95% second hand fabrics and using fabric at every size until they eventually can become stuffing!

We measure impact in a range of ways. We look at participation, repeat attendance, community growth and digital engagement, but we also value the conversations that happen around the sewing table. Feedback, observations and personal stories help us understand how people's attitudes towards clothing are changing over time.

For us, success isn't only measured by the number of workshops we deliver, but by the confidence we build, the skills we share and the lasting relationships people develop with their clothes, and with one another.

FOUNDER
Corporate workshops

Her background as a facilitator and creative, mixed in with a loud frustration for the way in which the fashion system operated catalysed the creation of Weaving Change.

‘I’ve always loved vintage shopping and car-boot sales, but I’ve definitely felt the spiral of overconsumption and the constant overwhelm that comes with fashion. I’m excited to be working with Weaving Change to challenge that side of the industry and help share a different message!
